Forest in the Desert
Pearce, Arizona,
United States
distant view in winter
 Forest in The Desert is a unique and interesting oasis in the high desert grasslands of S. E. Arizona. For over 30 years The Forest has been a place of learning about natural systems and how to cooperate with them. The original intention of the forest was to create a habitat that would be peaceful and harmonious place for all creatures. In this, it has greatly exceeded the original intent.
To avoid missunderstandings, we've developed and implemented "simple to follow" structured community-lifestyle rules.
WE OFFER A PLACE:
* receive & give mental, emotional & spiritual support
* express yourself respectfully
* cultivate meaningful relationships
* enjoy wisdom-learning study groups
* easily learn self-reliance skills
* share "green" lifestyle tasks
* enjoy "no drama" lifestyle
FLORA & FAUNA
Planting began in 1975 and still continues. Approximatly 4 acres of the 11 are planted. There are many species of trees in the forest; just over 1 acre is mature, the rest has from 15 years olds to newly planted. We have Junipers, Az. Cypress, many kinds of pines, Incense cedars, Atlas cedars, and Sequoias. There are several species of Oaks, evergreen and deciduos; also have elms, poplars and ash. There are two species of bamboo which have developed into very large and serene groves lending themselves to a very pleasant and cool summer retreat. The original plantings were fruit trees (mostly apple and pear) and many of them still bearing. The Forest is home to owls, hawks, humming birds and many kinds of song birds. There are box turtles, many kinds of lizards and snakes. At night there are coyotes, foxes, skunks and other creatures that are unseen.
OUTDOOR COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
Being that the weather is suitable for being outdoors much of the year, we encourage outdoor recreation such as hiking, biking, wild life studies and picnicing. Summer rains bring abundant varieties of wildflowers in the fields. We use organic living concepts and methods and cook with solar ovens as often as we can.
FINANCES & ECONOMY
To economically enhance our community, we are highly interested in people with productive ideas about developing practical and artistic projects.
