Base Camps Conservation Network
ARATULA, Queensland,
Australia
(P.O. Box 11 Kalbar Qld 4309)
Base Camps Conservation Network aims to provide affordable accommodation for people with a passion for environmental conservation, bush regeneration, and fauna protection.
A not-for-profit foundation/cooperative will hold all property and improvements in trust for the mutual benefit of the environment and the members. It will operate under Caravan Park and Mobile Home Park legislation, but future accommodation will be in clusters of cabins or units.
The members pay rent of $100-$130 per week, depending on type of accommodation, from their limited fixed incomes such as investments and Centrelink Pensions and other benefits. The joining fee is $5000 and payable by installments.
Members jointly plan, build, and operate the park using an online Participatory Decision Making Process, which allows all residents equal voice (see 1062.org).
Members are encouraged to volunteer their energy for a couple of hours a day and join groups of like-minded people participating in activities they are passionate about and that are beneficial to the community, growing food for the members to share and eat together.
We will volunteer our services to various conservation organizations, as well as contracting to Councils and farmers for tree planting, etc.
Initially, accommodation will be in caravans, later to be replaced with Council-approved cabins and units. Clusters of from 10 to 30 residents will be spaced around the property, sharing group houses for socializing and meals, etc.
We are presently operating at Aratula caravan park in a small town 80 kilometers southwest of Brisbane. There is a wonderful little town, Boonah, just 15 km away with all facilities. Aratula is on the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range.
We plan to lease or purchase this caravan park as well as an adjoining 40 acres of flat land with a creek.
The total population at any location is to be up to 300 residents. Members may move within a location or to a new location without cost or penalty.
We plan to have a carpool to make it unnecessary to own a private car.
