Rocinante
Summertown, Tennessee,
United States
Rocinante is a cooperative village of elders, midwives, and people of other ages and occupations -- a 501(c)(3) nonprofit honoring the effect of "good energy" on transitions of birth and death. Started by Stephen Gaskin, founder of the Farm, Rocinante is 100 acres of rolling Tennessee hills and meadows, separated from the Farm by "the IRS and a barbed wire fence." Although we are legally separate entities, the people from Rocinante participate in the social life on the Farm.
People generally need to build their own cabin/house (or have it built) and they need to handle their own living expenses and pay $100/month dues to Rocinante. The project is named after Don Quixote's horse, Rocinante. (In medieval Spanish a "rocin" is an old horse, and the ending "nante" means "grand" or "great," so the word means "Supernag.") Also, John Steinbeck's pickup truck was named Rocinante. Stephen thought Rocinante looked like the vehicle for incurable idealists. For information, write stephen@supernag.org.
