CoGar Community Gardens is a network of suburban neighbors who share their fruit and vegetable gardens. Headquarters are in Decatur, Georgia, an establishment that serves as an alternative healing arts and education center.
Our vision is to take steps towards sustainability, starting with sharing local organically grown produce. By breathing new life into an existing neighborhood, rather than clearing more land and building new structures, we hope to provide an example of how we can seek a high quality of life while leaving the planet better than we found it (watch www.storyofstuff.com).
We are starting small, with three contiguous single-family dwellings and five noncontiguous. As we grow, we will expand our sustainability projects, such as solar power, bulk purchases of commodities, alternative transportation, and transportation sharing.
Here are the features we are offering now (or in some cases very shortly):
1. An organic garden CSA consisting of neighbors’ lawns converted to vegetables. (Our goal is 50 participating neighbors, a combined five acres under cultivation, irrigated via rain barrel, plus enough chickens to achieve organic egg-independence, with approval from neighbors.)
2. The Tara Room: a large classroom for dance, music, yoga, theatre, and meditation (with excellent soundproofing in and between rooms).
3. The Ziva Room: a smaller space for massage, Reiki, therapy, and counseling (it can be divided with curtains into two or three smaller session rooms).
4. A children's play area, consisting of a multilevel tree house, sandbox, and rope swing (in the future we will add a climbing net).
5. Solar water heating (supplemented by on-demand water heaters).
6. Solar panels (for electricity) and skylights, plus energy-efficient bulbs (for light).
7. Ample bicycle, scooter, and car parking (plus an experimental electric bicycle).
8. Roof-water catchment and drip irrigation system (our goal is using only rainwater for irrigation).
9. A composting area for all organic kitchen and yard waste, and recycling bins for cardboard, paper, plastic, glass, and metals.
10. Wireless internet, plus assistance with marketing and scheduling your classes or services.
In the future we are looking to add a hot tub under the stars and other fun features that enhance the property. We also plan a library and community of goods allowing people to share “stuff” and live more freely with less.
