Beech Hill Community
Devon, England,
United Kingdom
(EX176RF)
We live in a large old house in the rolling Devon hills. Accommodation is both rented and leasehold, in converted outbuildings and in the main house. On our seven acres of land we grow organic fruit and vegetables. We have a paddock with sheep and chickens, an orchard, a vineyard, a walled garden, a swimming pool, compost toilets, and a reed-bed sewage system. Together we run a course center and spend the income on community projects. We share responsibility for our home and the land on which we live. We have shared meals most evenings and at least 20 birthdays a year (cake, candles, and song). We participate in the wider community, promoting awareness of everyone's impact on the environment, through the local recycling scheme and community-open days. Individuals earn their income in the wider world in journalism, education, recycling, complementary health and alternative ceremonies; some work from home. We do not want our community to be a place of dogmatism, judgment, or preaching. We value our diversity and flexibility. We aim to care for one another and enjoy life as it happens. We welcome each other's differences and enjoy visitors and volunteers.
