| We are a community for contemporary arts and sustainable living, offering a unique immersion experience in sustainability on an organic farm dedicated to fostering mindful lives through farm practices and collaborations across the arts. Hearth operates with a goal of collective self-sufficiency through inspired, grateful, and creative work on 200 acres of land in upstate New York's Thousand Island region.
The Hearth Community is comprised of artists in all mediums from creative writing to sculpture. Artists work to communicate their larger artistic goals outside of their residency in combination with a proposal for a site-specific project to be completed on the farm. Room and board are offered in exchange for labor on the property and involvement in the Community Sponsered Arts and Agriculture Project. The extent of a resident's involvement with the larger mission of the farm is determined by the artists and the creative director. This involvement can range from weekend retreats to full seasonal stays at Hearth.
Also, visitors are welcome to apply for The Bonfire Fellowship: a weekend-long event in which a multitude of artists are invited to participate in site-specific installations of their work across the 200 acres and multiple structures of Hearth Farm. Bonfire is both a fundraising event for the farm (a $30 donation is suggested per visitor) and an opportunity to showcase Hearth's achievements throughout the season (including the work of residents, both artistic and agricultural), to give walking tours of the property, and to allow outside artists and visitors a chance to consider future residencies. All in attendance are invited to camp onsite (hotel lodging is also available in nearby Alexandria Bay) and enjoy live music, wine tastings, and bonfires, and participate in farm work and harvesting. | Community location is placed at the center of the zip/postal code, city/state, or city/country (not based on street addresses) |
