| We are a small community of four living on a 28-acre "eco-homestead" in a sparsely populated mountain valley in northwest Montana.
Besides the human inhabitants we have three horses, two cats, and a dog living together, as well as wild animals too numerous to mention. We have a large organic garden and grow much of the food we consume.
We eat something from the garden every day of the year, utilizing the root cellar in winter. We heat our living space and water with wood we gather on the land or nearby.
Though we "own" this land, we like to think of ourselves as caretakers. We've only domesticated about three acres and leave the remainder in a wild state.
Our property borders a wild river and is situated in a rural subdivision surrounded by vast state-forest lands. The valley is heavily forested and surrounded on both sides by high mountains and huge federally protected wilderness areas.
We work hard but enjoy wildland recreation opportunities such as hiking, backcountry skiing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, and mountainbiking.
We make our living by creating arts and crafts and selling them in shops and galleries as well as farmers’ markets and festivals. We also sell extra produce from our garden through local CSA (community supported agriculture) customers. We have a small bakery that produces organic baked goods for local markets, baking in an outdoor wood-fired earthen oven.
Keeping this all going is a fairly large responsibility. Things slow down around here in the winter, which allows time for skiing, as well as being creative and producing creations for summer markets.
Ideally, at some point we would like to have more time for traveling during the off-season.
Future plans include some building projects like creating an earthship guest house, a wood-fired sauna and expanding the garden. Status: no longer an intentional community |
