SBSHC: Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative
Isla Vista, California,
United States
The Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative (SBSHC) provides students democratic control, community ownership, safe, inexpensive housing, and greater social interaction. A wide range of students from a variety of backgrounds and countries are attracted to our student housing co-ops. We own three group houses and one apartment building located near the University of California, Santa Barbara campus.
SBSHC has an open membership policy. Not only do we not discriminate in any way, but we actively encourage diversity among our groups in order to stimulate education and awareness.
Members must attend house meetings two to three times per academic quarter and complete at least five hours of co-op work duties per quarter, in addition to normal house chores and maintenance. Members own and operate the co-op. Rent charges reflect the costs of running and maintaining the co-ops. No profits are made; income goes toward paying off loans as well as paying staff salaries, with surplus earnings being reinvested in the buildings, the residents, and further co-op expansion. A portion of the budget is assigned to member education programs and workshops.
SBSHC is committed to environmentally responsible living. We are also affiliated with the North American Students of Cooperative Organization (NASCO).
