Hart's Mill
Efland, North Carolina,
United States
(West of Durham-Raleigh-Chapel Hill)
Hart's Mill seeks people with appropriate skill sets and resources to establish an agricultural-based ecovillage on 114 acres of prime, raw agricultural land located west of the Research Triangle Park area. We are located approximately 10 minutes west of Chapel Hill in the Efland area. There is an adjacent 55 acres that may also be in the mix. None of the land has any housing or structures as yet, however this will all change beginning in 2013.
We have completed our visioning process, written our vision, mission and membership documents and begun recruitment. We envision growing a community to somewhere between 36 and 100 people. The size of the community will depend upon the carrying capacity of the land. As of this writing we are in the process of site planning using permaculture, bioharmony and other sustainable principles. We are actively seeking people who wish to join our community who have the necessary skills and talents to help us transform raw land into a functioning ecovillage.
In addition to our work with the land, we seek to develop strong social, organizational and economic components. Socially we will strive for authentic inter-personal relationships, development of trust, non-violent communication and dynamic governance (sociocracy). Organizationally we are combining use of the non-profit organization, land trust and housing cooperative to achieve our community goals. Economically we are developing new models for finance, business development and affordability. Several of us have our own businesses. Additionally, we hope to develop community-based enterprises which can provide employment for our members.
We’re well networked with other intentional communities and are big believers in not reinventing the wheel. We have good relations with other intentional communities in North Carolina and are exploring opportunities for increased cooperation and collaboration.
