Sacred Garden Sanctuary
Douglas, Arizona,
United States
Summer Monsoon Season
 The land is 40 acres in the high chaparral of southeastern Arizona, close to Mexico and New Mexico.
We are focused on sustainability using permaculture methodologies and a simple low-impact lifestyle. We plan to construct a food-producing ecosystem that will provide many raw fruits and vegetables.
Our plan for housing is to use Cal-Earth adobe construction to build about 10 eco-dome homes for participants around a central community center, and additional 10- to 12-foot one-room adobe domes for visitors.
Currently there are two participants living in temporary housing (motorhome and camper).
Our long term goals are to:
• host workshops in sustainable living;
• encourage personal spiritual growth;
• research and develop dry-land sustainable agriculture;
• enjoy life to its fullest potential;
• produce surplus food to sell at farmers’ markets and give to food banks.
We interact with the city of Douglas, about 11 miles away, and get involved as each individual desires.
Our values are aligned with permaculture values:
• caring for people
• caring for the earth
• limiting population growth to ensure the sustainability of human civilization
We value culture and diversity.
We believe that a large percentage of raw foods in the diet, primarily fruit, enhances and sustains health, and we will be focusing our agriculture in that direction. However, you do not need to eat a 100 percent raw-food diet to join the community. All vegetarians are welcome.
We plan to leave about 20 of the 40 acres undeveloped to provide a place for natural flora and fauna to flourish.
We are still in the early stages of formation. The land is currently held in trust by a Corporation Sole. The land ownership will be changed to a nonprofit foundation no later than July 2010.
We have participation requirements on our website. We are still refining the guidelines for taking care of housing capital costs, which will include purchase up-front by members and rent in lieu of purchase.
There may be future grant opportunities for some or all of the developments we plan.
