Greenhouse
Lutz, Florida,
United States
Our six-bedroom house is located in Lutz, a suburb of Tampa, Florida. Our vision is to model a more sustainable / low carbon footprint style of living within the suburban infrastructure.
Three main components we have identified are food, home energy consumption, and transportation. Our food politics are informed somewhat by vegetarianism and veganism, although more so by the local foods movement. We are in the process of building a garden, and would ideally like to grow the majority of the produce we consume. Ducks and/or chickens are a future possibility as a source of eggs and potentially meat. We aim to reduce our home energy consumption in several ways, most importantly by conservation and using human powered alternatives. When this is realistically not an option, we try to use high efficiency devices. In terms of transportation, we try to riding bikes whenever possible, or carpool.
We are dedicated to reducing reliance on fossil fuels, social justice, dismantling racisim / oppression, diy culture, simple living (no teevee), queer positive, permaculture and wildcrafting, non-violent communication, consensus.
We have weekly house meetings/check-ins to discuss any important issues, scheduling of events, and resolve any conflicts. Often followed by a game night / dinner / etc afterwards.
House projects we are currently working on, or for the near future: Our Garden, Large solar oven, Solar food dryer, Rainwater harvesting, Manual clothes washer, to name a few.
We are located 14 miles north of Tampa and about 7 miles from USF. The house is within easy walking/biking distance (couple miles) to two grocery stores, a couple of public parks, nature preserve, public library, and elementary school. There are nearby wooded areas with miles of hike-able trails.
***We are looking for new housemates / community members!***
