| Polcum Springs is a collectively owned, permaculture homestead in Mendocino County, CA. We are pioneering a land and community stewardship model on 200+ acres, where we live with others, raise children, grow food, keep chickens, practice sustainable forestry & eco-building, offer workshops & host events. We aim to create and sustain a residential community – focused on ecological responsibility, self-knowledge, loving relationships, and connection to spirit – which will be shared with others for retreat, renewal & learning. Our name comes from the indigenous Yuki word, pol’-cum, the nut of the Califronia Bay Laurel tree.
At Polcum Springs, we put sustainability into action. We collectively purchased this land in 2001 as raw land with abundant sources of spring water, potential & big dreams. Since 2003, we have built infrastructure, including off-grid solar energy systems, developed springs, water storage, ponds, waste water treatment systems, a common house and small pole barn, composting toilets, an outdoor bathouse, a cob oven, geodesic dome & yurt. Our permaculture site plan incorporates polyculture plantings on terraced hillsides, bio-itensive garden beds, and bio-dynamic practices including preparations & compost-making. We keep chickens & imagine having sheep or goats in the future. Responsible hunting and wildcrafting is an important part of our diet. Using indigenous forestry prescriptions, we are restoring part of our forests to their pre-contact state & are utilizing the resulting small-diameter douglas fir poles for building projects.
Our population fluctuates from 4-9 residents & our community extends to additional off-site members. We own the land as an LLC. We share meals, we're locavores.
We seek new members & residents -- Do you love living in nature? Are you serious about shared living, community-building, healthy communication, are self-directed & motivated to initiate & follow through on projects to completion? Skills such as carpentry, plumbing, organizing, healing modalities, child-care, permaculture, farming & mechanics are highly valued. Our website has additional information about our membership process.
You can also “try us out” by renting a space. Renters are an important part of our shared living experience.
