 VISION
We live in a family inclusive urban intentional Community. As a community we develop our relationship skills and intentions to create deep connection within ourselves and with others. We work to establish a culture in which compassionate giving and joyful living are natural. We strive to be a sustainable community living in peace and harmony, both within and without.
CORE VALUES
We strive to achieve our vision by pursuing the following core values:
Prioritizing the Vitality/Wellness/Connectedness of our Relationships
We value learning how to develop relationships of higher quality in our Community, through transparent and receptive communication with each other, self-reflection, inclusive decision-making, hearing the one voice, thoughtful conflict resolution, and mutual support of one another's dreams and personal growth.
Joy in Companionship
We value holding each other with positive regard, taking joy in one another, interacting playfully with each other, and sharing activities such as communal meals.
Cooperative Parenting
We value living as a large family, sharing the joys and challenges of living with children.
Life-Enhancing Diversity
We value welcoming members of diverse backgrounds, ages, and family status (with or without children).
Eco-Friendly Living
We value eco-friendly living by sharing resources, reducing waste, and moving away from consumerism. We value uniting and balancing eco-friendly living with wellbeing and a comfortable home.
Life-Affirming Social Change
We value life-affirming social change through outreach as well as internal practices. We value peace, fair trade, responsible buying, involvement in the community around us, and promoting these values.
Respect for Animals
We value awareness of animals as feeling beings and considering the impact of our choices upon their lives.
IMPLEMENTATION
Location: A four-floor all brick building with 12 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms and much common space to share. 2 blocks from the food-co-op, walking distance to Takoma metro, library, community center, Sligo Creek park, restaurants, Liz Lerman dance exchange, and tot-lots.
Co-ownership model: We have developed a hybrid co-ownership model that makes it possible to buy-in or develop equity over time in the legal entity that owns the building.
Sharing: We have a housework share with a few hours a week toward common "work" (cleaning, cooking, child care, gardening, maintenance, etc), a car share, a community fund that provides for utilities, lots of common shared food, 5 or more house meals per week, and eco-friendly household products.
Goals and Decision-making: We have a vision and values statement (above), and document of intention and practice that describes our approach and goals in more detail. We use a values-based consensus model of decision making and can form committees of interest so that community members have the opportunity to be involved in decisions that will affect them or the house.
Status: See our website for information about openings or exploring living with us.
