Chickens are definitely in the plans...
We are a family in the Marinette/Menominee area who are interested in finding other couples, individuals, or families who would like to live more sustainably and in a manner that prepares us for the inevitable ups and downs of life. Job loss, accidents, drawn-out storms, natural or man-made disasters… we are interested in making it through tough situations like these without assistance from external sources like the government.
Our goals are multiple and varied, and we would love to find someone to share them with. The main one is to someday be able to grow, harvest, and process 75% or more of our own food. With a family to take care of, a shaky economy, and rising grocery prices, we would like to have some food security. We believe in storing up for emergencies, and like to keep at least a month worth of food and supplies on hand at any time, but would like to someday get our stocks up to cover a year or more. We are avid gardeners, beekeepers, and home-processors. We have experience raising some smaller livestock and slaughtering chickens, and will quickly learn how to process our own large livestock when we have the land to raise it on.
Another goal is to be free from the grid by use of solar and wind energy. My husband is a techie, and already has multiple plans drawn up for alternative systems. We like the idea of having a windmill pump water into a large cistern or water tower, then use gravity to pressurize the water. We have experience in heating and cooking with a woodstove, and plan on using one in our future home. We are rather attached to our computers and various little helpful items like mixers and lights, and we know we could get most, if not all, of our necessary electricity for these everyday devices from a well set-up PV system.
Finally, we believe in the importance of community and families. We would love to have other people to share this journey with. Not only would we enrich each other’s lives, but as the old saying goes: two hands are better than one. We are helpful to a fault and willing to learn just about anything we have to. If you are interested in joining us on this venture, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are going in this direction whether or not we can put together a group… we just think it would be a lot more fun and interesting to make this happen with other people.
