Calyx Institute: A Center for Cultivating Joy
Massachusetts,
United States
We are in the initial planning phase of creating an intentional community and retreat center devoted to cultivating joy through meditative practice and balanced, healthy living. The community will be a Buddhist sangha, eco-village and healing retreat center. We will provide integrative family medical care, restorative health spa services, educational programs including instruction in meditation and yoga, Buddhist study groups and instruction, education and care for children of all ages, wholesome vegetarian meals, and lodging/retreat facilities including secluded personal meditation retreats in a rustic setting. We are seeking physicians, integrative health care professionals, massage practitioners and bodyworkers, yoga and movement instructors, sustainable design experts, horticulturists, craftspeople, teachers, web-designers, musicians and chefs to join us. Our spiritual practice will be inspired by the original teachings of the Buddha (common to all Buddhist lineages) and will be guided by our resident monks and nuns. We hope to form a core group of committed people and families within the next year and to begin looking for land by the summer of 2009.
Our vision is symbolized by the calyx (pronounced 'kaylix'). The calyx is the cup-shaped structure of a plant that protects the bud and supports its transformation into a flower. The word 'calyx' is related to 'chalice', the ceremonial cup used in many spiritual traditions. In a similar way, Calyx Institute will be a spiritual center that nurtures transformation and growth.
