Cambridge Street House
The Bread and Roses Collective House provides a model of cooperative living, ecological sustainability, and affordable housing in the heart of the city.
We live in a beautiful old house on a quiet residential street in Syracuse, NY. We subscribe to the idea of "Food, not Lawns" and have an intensive kitchen garden out front, and a bathtub salad garden on our driveway. We also have two plots at the local community gardens and grow most of our own vegetables in the summer.
We are now in the middle of our renovation project to restore an 1890's house from a two-family rental unit back to a single family. It will be move-in ready in late spring 2012, making our collective into a two house community, joined physically by a half-acre of undeveloped land which now hosts eight raised beds, a six-bin compost system, and a collection of baby fruit trees, berry bushes and a growing native plant population.
We have a strong commitment to social justice activism and community participation. We have hosted or participated in workshops on consensus process and democratic decision making, food preservation, composting, bike fixing, making salves and lotion, natural dyes, and more! With our new house's location on a busy neighborhood street, we hope to increase our educational and community outreach programs.
