 ORGANIC SMALLHOLDING IN CENTRAL PORTUGAL
UPDATE MARCH 2011:
We are selling the smallholding and moving to a bigger project! For full details and photos of the quinta for sale please see www.portugalsmallholding.org/for-sale/
For details of the new community project we are moving to please see www.valedaslobas.com
THE QUINTA (SMALLHOLDING)
2.7 hectares of mostly terraced, organic land on a south-facing slope overlooking the valley and two mountain ranges.
We have two main gardens on the quinta – one overseen by Andy and one by Sophie. Here we grow as much of our own food as possible, enjoying fresh-picked fruit and vegetables in the summer, and preserving and storing for winter. We also have fruit, nut & citrus trees, grape vines (for juice and wine) and olive trees (for eating and oil).
There are 3 small areas of hillside woodland (pine, mimosa, oak) which supply some of our firewood and building timber.
We have horses, ducks and chickens, dogs and cats on the quinta, plus a variety of wildlife - salamanders, frogs, hoopoes, woodpeckers, owls, foxes, black kites & more!
10 mins walk to the village, with bars, shop, and restaurant, and 15-20 mins walk to the river Mondego for swimming and fishing.
Volunteers and short-term community members welcome year-round. We are also open to the possibility of more long-term / permanent community members.

As a native Portuguese, I visited them for about a week in October 2009 and I really enjoyed my experience there. They are a family-size community, surrounded by a beautiful permaculture farm around, with a big variety of vegetables and trees. When I volunteered there, I helped them with setting up beehives, cleaning the greenhouses and painted one of their houses with natural ink! The surroundings are beautiful and very green. They have a big passion for horses (so you can try horseback riding). The food and wine was very good (and no problem with myself being a vegetarian). I could say I became friends with them, and I really intent to visit them more times.
