Emerson Tenants Cooperative
Duluth, Minnesota,
United States
Emerson Tenants Cooperative is a cooperative housing organization in Duluth, Minnesota. Approximately 25 individuals live in a historic former elementary school built in 1891 on the hillside overlooking Lake Superior and St. Louis Bay. Decisions are made through democratic process according to the bylaws. Each member pays a monthly housing fee and is required to perform a set amount of work hours per month.
HISTORY: Emerson was a school for nearly 100 years until being closed by the city in 1979. Several years later the building was purchased and made into apartments. For several years, Emerson languished under bad management. Residents came together to purchase the building and form a housing cooperative. We've been a successful co-op since 1984.
Emerson is an artistic and cultural hotbed of Duluth. All persuasions of folks live and pass through; some stay for decades, some for just a year (or less). Each member "rents" a former classroom. There are communal kitchens and bathrooms. We have high ceilings, wood floors, original chalkboards and cabinets, a lot of common space, art studios, a gym, and a nice little garden.
