Heartwood Community Incorporated Te Ngakau O Te Rakau
Christchurch,
New Zealand
Heartwood Community was founded in 1970 on the alternative-society visions of that era. In 1971 a large gabled mansion, Chippenham, was purchased for communal living; in 1972 an adjoining property, Mansfield, was added; in 1973 a small farm, Gricklegrass, and a small bakery were purchased, and the bakery was run as a cooperative for some years. Each house is shared by 8---12 people, sharing meals, work, and renovation tasks but with individuals retaining their own income and independent lifestyles and varying beliefs. The houses are owned by the community, a nonprofit society, and residents do not need to invest money--just commit to community goals and pay a weekly rental. Each of the three properties runs more or less as an autonomous community, but they work together as one society. Chippenham and Mansfield share common grounds (especially the kids!), a beautiful enclave not far from the center of Christchurch City (population 320,000). Gricklegrass, with 30 acres, mainly in pasture, some organic crops, is near Oxford nearly 30 miles away. Visitors and guests (small charge), especially from other communities, are welcome; prior contact preferable. Heartwood also publishes a small newsletter, _Chip n Away,_ for its own members and sharing news between 30 communities around New Zealand.
