Ever since the upsurge of the current cycle of resistance to capitalism worldwide, political activists have been talking about the need to supplement their protests and direct actions with the construction of on-the-ground alternatives that can proliferate and hollow out the given society, building local self-reliance and sustainable community.
Intent on moving from promises to performance, we intend to establish a deep-ecology community in Kna'an (Canaan), the land that is called Israel by some and Palestine by others. The temporary name for the project is Amoria, combining the Hebrew names for Gomorrah (Amora) and the Temple Mount (Moria), to create a name that resonates with love.
Acquiring land in the most densely populated and politically contested part of the world is a real challenge! We have delayed this decision until we could gain a greater understanding of rural community living (and explore the possibility of joining a pre-existing community). We split up into pods and have spent the last 2.5 years living in communities A, L, O, T & S.
Now we are in a process of re-engaging, sharing lessons learned, and evaluating next steps. We are coming to conclusions regarding community size, social structures, and levels of sharing. We have also realized that nationalism, speciesism, and other rankisms are deeply embedded unstated assumptions in almost all communities.
Therefore, a proposal has been made to acquire property rights to a site of ancient Hebrew-Canaanite goddess worship. We hope that by creating a connection to this particular patch of land, we will firmly anchor ourselves in anarchist principles and create a community where kind people of all ethnicities, ages, and genders are given equal opportunity.
We are committed to undoing the damage done to the bioregion by our everyday actions. We are driven both by the compassion to aid other living beings in need at the individual level, and by the passion to critique the larger systems of control and engage them at their pressure points to co-create social justice. We want to challenge ourselves and each other to be better people, and we want to have a lot of fun while we're doing it!
Our collective is open to others of like mind and like heart: forest foragers, anti-war activists, and cultural creatives. We want to be self-sufficient so that we can survive (and thrive) under peak oil and peak everything, pioneering a post-zionist, post-palestinian, post-modern and post-carbon future!
