The Communal Solution
Natural Dam, Arkansas,
United States
(open to any location)
Chris Greene
We theorize that some form of communal living is and always has been the way we should live if we want to experience life at its finest. This would also contribute positively and greatly towards social and economic justice, world peace and a truly sustainable way of living. Life in communes, contrary to popular belief, would not be strange or foreign. We are a social and cooperative species and are rarely far removed from one another either physically or cooperatively. We are simply suggesting that we be more deliberate and conscientious about this fact and come up with agreements and expectations of our own choosing, not conform to someone else's. These communes could and would be different depending on what a particular group and the individuals in it wanted. These communal and cooperative arrangements that we could choose for ourselves would be far better than the ones imposed upon us now by an insensitive and sometimes uncaring and brutal “system.”
Here is what we would like in our community - commune
1. 150 to 300 people
2. A land base of several hundred acres
3. Communally provided housing and food (prepared) in exchange for a maximum of 4 hrs of labor per day (and if possible, just 2 hrs) …….. this low labor requirement is because members would be responsible themselves for meeting their own other personal and individual needs and desires; as well as for other reasons.
And share a few (to us) profoundly important ethics amongst members. These are:
4. That overpopulation is something real and avoidable and that all members would voluntarily keep personal procreation within a community mandated sustainable number.
5. That we must eat a whole foods diet of organically raised and produced food.
6. That pacifism is the only intelligent response to the issue of organized warfare.
7. That any creating of gain or money that doesn’t involve one’s own personal and active involvement in the production of goods or providing of services is usury and injurious to any social body or community.
Even though several hundred acres would be the ideal, we are beginning to think this property in Arkansas we have been care taking almost a year now (which could be purchased) might possibly be a way to begin. There are a number of pluses regarding this particular location (west central Arkansas) and specifically this 35 acre property.
We’ve been at this a long time, a lifetime really. We’re written a lot, read a lot and experienced a lot; all related to this subject. In a culture steeped in individualism and ownership to say we’d actually be freer human beings, healthier, happier individuals living communally is not an easy sell. But we are not giving up trying to explain the whys and what we believe are the how toes.

I am intrigued by your statements and plan on reading through the web links you included. I have always envisioned such a lifestyle and am open to what life brings and the possibilites that present themselves in this area.

How many other share this dream with you and have made any type of commitment to it as yet?

What is the next step?
