Chestnut Living and Learning Center
Economic Eco-Village is a sustainable-living and learning center in Pennsylvania. The center seeks to aid members in being able to get a good start on the Village without the economic weight of having a large mortgage for 30 years to pay for their housing. Members will house-share for two years prior to moving into the Village. During the two years, an intensive savings plan will be required. Saving most if not all income from working will be a difficult task. Income for food and utilities will be obtained by working one or two weekends per month. Also during the period, the members will learn a trade for later building their home. Each member will share, on an equal-time basis, his or her skill to help other members with the construction. Living sustainably with economics in mind allows for savings while living in an environmentally sound manner.
The residence will be provided by a sponsor who will receive one land-share in exchange for the use of the residence for the two years. Sponsors will provide housing for the members. The selection of sponsors will be based on their ability to aid the members and the program. The sponsors will need to show financial stability to be able to progress through the program for the two-year period. Sponsors will also be asked to contribute to the Common House, which is for meals, group meetings, and recreation at the home site. Areas for gardens and common open space will also be provided. Members have the ability to get a head start on their life plan by getting a home without a loan. Having this large financial burden removed allows members to follow more important designs than the standard job. Sponsors have the chance to aid in the development of a cadre of talented professionals in the areas of peace, justice and environment. Those who have a plan for their contribution to society will have the best chance of being selected. Honesty, hard work, and tolerance are all traits the selection committee will evaluate.
