Not cohousing but a cooperative urban neighborhood, the center of which, Halcyon Commons, is a park designed and built by neighbors where there once was a parking lot in the middle of the street (process begun in 1992, completed in 1996, with new features added in 2008). There are regular community potlucks, a strong crimewatch, community animal and child gatherings in the park, a regular email newsletter that reaches 400-plus households, strong disaster preparedness, regular community park cleanups and weeding/mulching work parties, concerts in the park, and other celebrations. Living near Halcyon Commons is a way of affording something with some features of cohousing in Berkeley.
