 Sanctuary - An Intentional Community
We're gearing up to start a sustainable veg community here in Cali. We're looking towards a "town" type atmosphere, geared towards agriculture, green energy, and environmental recreation.
* Government, Decision Making;
- We are planning on a consensus based decision making model, with a large (80 or 85%) majority rules clause for things like time constraints, or needed decisions bogged down in unwavering debate. We want to have rotating "elected" folks to head committees, and able to act as representatives for those unwilling/unable to vote. Committees will be established based on areas of the community,(Agriculture,Public Works,Town Facilitation,Education,Health Services,Builders,etc.).
* Sustainability and Ecology
- Buildings will be of different styles, but will be sustainable & low impact. Main focus will be on Cobb, Wood, Stone, and Canvas Yurts. Possibly Rastra and Earth Ships. Energy will be nature produced, with green fuels mandatory in all vehicles. We are leaning heavily towards a large portion of the community (3/4 or so) being "vehicle free" except in case of emergency.
* Source of Income
- We've identified 15 to 20 "businesses" which we feel are neccessary to both be sustainable, meet the needs, comfort and community for our residents, and keep contact and interaction with the "outside world". Residence (including children) will have a "job" based on their interests and abilities. Work provides each resident with housing, food, services, recreation, basically everything the community has to offer. Any profits will be used to pay community costs (i.e. - taxes, needed supplies, goods and services, etc.), a portion will be split between 3 community funds (Savings, Emergency, Education), and the remainder will be split equally between all residence of voting age.
* Membership
- We have identified a need for a minimum population of 120 adults to meet our sustainability and community needs, and we believe a thriving community would max out around 250 adults. Of course, there are also children, but that number is arbitrary. It is as it is. Hopefully, many.
- The land will be put into a land trust, and membership in the trust will be after an initial investment and 1 year work and residence, or 3 years work and residence, or being born on the land.
