Emergency Communities
St. Bernard Parish, Plaquemines Parish, and New Orleans, Louisiana,
United States
getting the Made With Love Cafe & Grill set up in the big dome
Emergency Communities was a disaster relief service organization in St. Bernard Parish after Hurricane Katrina.. Volunteers lived in individual tents or dorm tents, or their own campers or vehicles. The primary mission of the organization was to serve meals to returning residents of the parish. The organization served as many as 3000 meals a day, though the average was about half that number. The organization lived for six months in St. Bernard Parish, then about a year in Plaquemines Parish and, for several months served meals in the Ninth Ward in New Orleans. There is a web site in the planning stages depicting the life, people, and conditions of the community. For now, refer to www.nascentconstellation.com for an online elegy dedicated to one of the volunteers who passed away in November, 2007, Rob Matson.
