Sherman House
MOSAIC (Members of Society Acting in Cooperation) began as the brainchild of a group of Northwestern students who were interested in finding an alternative form of student housing in Evanston. They founded the original house at 2013-2015 Ridge, and in September of 1998 the first 12 co-op members moved in.
They established the original mission statement and developed a house structure based on cooperative living. Using the mission statement, they tried to guide the activities of the house along principles such as environmental consciousness, consensus decision making, and activism.
In the summer of 2004, MOSAIC moved to its current location at 2000 Sherman. In the summer of 2008, MOSAIC added a second house at 906 Hamlin. We are currently an 18-person housing cooperative with 13 members at our Sherman house and five members at the Hamlin house. By pooling our resources, we hope to minimize our costs of living and maximize the power behind our decisions as conscious consumers. We are a close-knit community dedicated to living out our ideals and values in our daily actions and interactions.
We are approximately two blocks from Northwestern University, and many of our members are students there. However, we have no affiliation with the university and welcome undergraduate students, graduate students, non-students, students of life, and everyone else.
