Forming
This page last updated:10/10/2005
Prairie Bliss
South Dakota,
United States
(northwest)
I am looking for a limited investment from eleven or fewer other people. It can be families ,singles, couples of all types, etc. A very open minded but hard working group of thinkers is wanted. All skills will be needed (we will need cooks, hunters, carpenters, farmers, and anyone with experience in veterinary situations, general labor, the ability to make preserves, sewing skills, dish washing, and anything else you can name). It's prarie land, and the winters will be long. It is an eighty-acre tract in northwestern South Dakota. We will hunt on a non-commercial basis, taking only what we need. Wild horses run free on the property as do several other animals. I would like to build a large stable for the tame horses and a corrall. I want to operate a farm and also a campsite during August of every year for Sturgis visitors (yes we would be close enough.)I also would be willing to take people on in exchange for food on a limited and probationary period. What this means is as long as everyone likes you, and you put in your share of work, you would always have a home. The town is unincorporated, meaning it's mostly farmers. We could help the community by building roads and donating them, etc.,(very long term and down the road project).
Status: Definately forming for may 2006

Visitors Accepted
(yes as long as we knew they were coming and they would work some before they left as an intern.)
Visitor Process: contact the email address , but it will be next spring before it is inhabited
Statement of Housing Non-discrimination:
No Answer Provided
Population
Non-member Residents:
(this would be up to the community, but as long as someone puts in labor they should eat)
Open to new members:
Yes
(yes we are still forming but it is up to two members.)
Government
Decision Making:
Other
(i would say majority rule would be closest to the truth, as long as the majority doesnt vote to burn our crops etc. basically i would like the core people to have all their ideas heard no matter how long it takes to let everyone speak then we can debate and vote. that sounds like the most reasonable process.)
Identified Leader:
Yes
(i would say myself right now because i did already buy the land and im putting together the community. the main thing i want to stress is a vote and a voice.i want all members to be heard.)
Leadership Core Group:
No
Labor and Money
Financial Style:
Partial income sharing
(Since i am pouring all of my resources into the community id ask the same. you dont have to sell everything you own, but it will take everyone.)
Labor Contribution:
Expected
(this is based on what you can do physically,if injured etc. theres alot of fun work to be done, camping under the stars etc. hopefully everyone will put in a good amount of work, but if you cant farm or do other construction type jobs, maybe a member could be the cook, etc.)
Join Fee:
Yes
(yes, but i gauruntee it will be minimal and less than almost anywhere else you would join that had a fee.)
Regular Fees:
No
(if you are a single mom who comes with 4 kids i just require you watch your children and put in what work you can maybe watching others children cooking, or if others would watch your children to help farm etc. anyone willing to work and have a positive attitude should be given a shot. i understand some very good people dont have the money to contribute, so i would hope the rest of the community feel like i do which is as long as you do your part you should have a roof ,food ,warmth and friends.)
Land and Buildings
Rural
(it is very rural, we will definately be farmers but every august we should make good money as a campsite for sturgis.)
Area:
80 acres (32.4 hectares)
(we can rent out 40 acres as a campsite a month a year to help pay for better equipment etc.)
Land Owned By:
Individual community member(s)
(i have 79.95 acres. the more you contribute to the project the more land percent youd be entitled to.)
Number of Residences:
1
(i would like to have one massive farmhouse, and then a guest and temp resident quarters. also a large dining hall set up also for music and dancing etc.)
Cohousing:
No
Food, etc.
Percentage of Food Grown:
21-50%
(we will budget in case of emergency but we will try to hunt (in season) and grow what we can.it is very rural and secluded.)
Share Community Meals:
Nearly all meals
(you would not have to eat in the dining hall but i would like to serve up buffet type meals and its a nice way to come together.)
Dietary Choice or Restrictions:
Diet is up to each individual
(i know some people are vegans and completely against hunting, but it will happen on a need to only and legal basis(no cruelty))
Dietary Practice:
Omnivorous
(people can eat what they want, we all will make requests and have the acreage to grow tons of crops so this is something to be discussed in the next ten months.)
Alcohol Use:
Used occasionally
(no alcoholics, but alcohol is not prohibited as long as you are not rude or offensive to any other community members)
Tobacco Use:
Used Occasionally
(i smoke, it will be outside. as long as you dont blow smoke at someone to be offensive or hurtful it should be fine.)
Social Factors
Common Spiritual Practices:
No
Which Spiritual Traditions(s):
Quaker
(i personally will put in all the work i can into the land when i am able. i have one other person commited to the project, he has a bad shoulder so he cant do as much work. the community will be reasonable about physical ailments conditions etc.)
Educational Style(s):
Home schooling
(i would have to guess homeschooling or public because im not sure about the school system yet, but i will find out and update)
