Denver Central Housing Cooperative
Denver, Colorado,
United States
This house has been a cooperative house for 18 years. It is in an ideal location near the center of Denver, on a quiet tree lined street with lots of parking. (We are located four blocks from the University of Denver campus and also light rail (walking distance),about 20 blocks from the center of Denver, Cherry Creek Shopping Mall, Capital Hill,Washington Park and 15 minute drive from the Denver Tech Center.) The house has hi speed internet and cable TV wiring in every bedroom. Also, each bedroom has its own private bathroom and thermostat.
The owner of the house (Deb) grew up in the sixties and has always lived collectively. She is an activist, aspiring Buddhist, lesbian feminist and her 22 year old son is a college student, who stills lives in the house. David has a bedroom, bathroom and living room in the basement. He is a film student at Univ of Colo Denver, very independent, busy with his friends, etc., and also respectful and used to collective living.
Deb remodeled the house three years ago and it is beautiful with fire place, balcony, view of the mountains, etc. There are two bedrooms that are open to people to rent (with each bedroom having its own bathroom, internet connection, etc.)
The vibes are mellow and respectful. We have house meetings once a month. People share in keeping the house, especially the eat-in kitchen clean, and we often cook together depending on people's schedules.(Each combination of people is different;ideally we would share cooking and eating several times a week.) There are two refrigerators so everyone's food needs can be respected.
People are independent, respectful and caring. Ideally we share fun times, emotional needs, trips to the Botanical Gardens, skiing, hiking, etc. Deb knows lots of resources and places to go and things to do in Denver. She is an activist in the local community radio station (KGNU) and various feminist groups and was very busy campaigning in the election of 2004 against Bush and for Salazar (Democrat U.S. Senator, who won!).
There is a garden in the back yard and lots of trees. The house is cool and pleasant in the summer. There is a nice patio, picnic table and hammock in the backyard, and a welcoming porch in the front of the house. There is a piano in the living room, fireplace, dining room, and the house has lots of charm and character with two stories and a balcony, skylights, hard wood floors, etc.
There are two ancient cats (aged 17) so no new pets are wanted at this time. There is no smoking in the house. The food is mostly vegetarian, but meat is cooked as desired. Lots of fruit and veggies from the farmer's market.
There is a garage for bicycles, etc. Deb has lived here for over 20 years and there have been no thefts or attempts in all that time. Very safe neighborhood for walking, bicycling, etc. There is good public transportation (for Denver) with several buses downtown and the light rail will be finished in 2006. Parking on the street is no problem in front of the house.
In summary, a mellow, beautiful house in a great location with various aged people and interests, but definitely progressive.
