L'Arche - Homefires
Wolfville, Nova Scotia,
Canada
L'Arche Homefires is an ecumenical Christian community where people with developmental disabilities and those who choose to share life with them live together and build community. We are a member of the International Federation of L'Arche Communities. Our mission is: (a) to create homes where faithful relationships based on forgiveness and celebration are nurtured; (b) to change society by choosing to live in community as a sign of hope and love.
Our community presently has five homes, a workshop, and a day program. We provide home/work for 17 people with disabilities. Our life is simple, centered around building relationships and celebrations. Assistants and persons with a disability live in the same home and build relationship through doing tasks together, cooking, prayer, cleaning, etc. We work together; sometimes the work is hard as we learn to serve each other. But there is much joy, and we discover that we often receive more than we give.
