Inter-Cooperative Council (ICC-Michigan)
Ann Arbor, Michigan,
United States
The Rochdale Center (aka The ICC Office)
Inter-Cooperative Council (ICC) was formed in 1937 by the housing co-ops on the University of Michigan campus in order to gain greater efficiency and economy in certain functions such as recruitment of new members, paying the taxes and mortgages, and overseeing large maintenance projects. In addition, ICC helps train new members and officers so that houses run more smoothly.
Our housing co-ops are owned and managed by the students who live in them. There are 17 group and 1 apartment house located on both central and north campus. The number of members in each house ranges from 13 to 150, with the average being about 33. All of our houses are co-ed. We have a substance-free house, non-smoking houses, and houses that serve vegetarian meals.
Houses are run democratically with each member having an equal voice. We rely on members to do all the work needed to run the houses (cooking, cleaning, planning, bookkeeping, etc.). Each member puts in four to six hours of work per week either at the house, ICC office, or through committee work.
