| Wisteria is located in Southeastern Ohio, near the city of Athens. We are organized as a corporation. Decisions are made at monthly meetings by a super-majority vote but we attempt to meet everyone’s needs in our decisions. All members are shareholders who elect a board of directors. Members are organized by households, and each household owns and votes shares.
At Wisteria we value our independence and individuality. Thus, we function more as a cooperative of homesteaders than as a commune. Our homes are widely spaced to allow for maximum privacy. And currently not all members are residential. We have a community building, which serves as a place for us to gather.
Wisteria’s land is an important part of our community. The land is in the process of healing and on-going reclamation after strip mining. Part of our guiding principle is to honor and nurture the land and ecosystems that we are a part of. Approximately, one third of our land is a nature preserve. Some members utilize solar power and other environmental innovations in their private homes.
Some of the reclaimed fields are used as an event campground. There we offer rustic space for gatherings of all types. We specialize in alternative events ranging from 20-1000 people. We both host and sponsor concerts, festivals, weddings, retreats, and we are open to many other group uses. We strive to create a highly developed educational event site, which brings people closer to nature. | Community location is placed at the center of the zip/postal code, city/state, or city/country (not based on street addresses) |
