Kerala Commune
Palakkad, Kerala,
India
(Thavalam P.O.)
The Kerala Commune is in Kerala, India. The commune is located in the valley below Malleswara Peak of the Neela Giri (blue mountain) range, on the bank of a beautiful freshwater river, the Bhavani. The mystic peak and unpolluted waters and air make the commune a pleasant, healthful place to live.
The commune was established by the end of 2004. Since the location is in the mountains, the weather is relatively cool even in the summer, without the scorching heat of the typical Kerala weather. Winter nights can be chilly. Monsoon rain starts in June and lasts till the end of October. The monsoon can be a windy, somewhat harsh downpour at times; however, those who love rain enjoy it. The local people are friendly; aggressive behaviour, theft, voyeurism, etc., from the local population have not so far been reported.
About 400 people visit the commune every year. Most of them are from Kerala or from other parts of India. We do get visitors from abroad, from the USA, Germany, and Iceland.
The objectives of the commune:
The practice of gender equality; organic farming; preservation and conservation of environment; development of alternative energy resources; treatment of illnesses with fruits, vegetables and sprouts; language teaching; yoga; recycling and reuse; education of the local population in the fields of organic farming and natural pest controls; promotion of natural products; upholding of secular values; respect for the right to worship; rejection of corporate funding; rejection of racism.
The commune land underwent an organic nutritional enhancement process for three years, and now we are planning on farming. Besides coconuts, we have seasonal mangoes, chakkas, and papayas.
A part of the commune treatment for illnesses is free of cost. The commune treats those from the lower strata of society and teaches them how to avoid dependence on drugs, the corporate drug industry, and the corporate hospital establishment. The commune has succeeded in treating and curing almost all kinds of illnesses, as well as infertility, without medicine.
We conduct weekly meetings in which local people attend and discuss diverse subjects.
We eat a healthful diet: fresh coconut, banana, whole wheat or rice, fresh and cooked vegetables, and no coffee or tea (you can have them from the nearby restaurant if you need them). However, we are not fanatic about diet. For festivals like New Year’s, etc., we do eat fish and meat.
