Common Ground Community
Blountsville, Alabama,
United States
We are 10 like-spirited adults and three, now adult and gone, children. We are excited to welcome our oldest adult child and her family, into seed membership status in our community. Our purpose includes harmony with our environment, nurturance, celebration of spiritual diversity, and social change. The community leases 80 acres of farmland from Gaia Land Trust, created in 1980, and members sub-lease holdings. The trust's purpose is to own and preserve land and improvements, promote community, honor ecosystems, and prevent abuse of resources. The community pays monthly rent to the trust. Community members pay dues and rent equally, and in-kind service is an option. Each member is economically independent. The trust pays taxes, fire protection, maintenance, etc. With no community members, the land would devolve to a party committed to preservation of the land.
We gather monthly for a day of work, play, and business (using modified consensus). Working through difficult decisions and writing our guidelines have developed deep trust and extended family. In 35 years as a community, only 2 full members have left. All but one of us are now living on the land full time. We live in owner-built structures heated with wood and solar, and passively cooled. Power varies from solar to conventional to mixed, but conservation is key in all. We enjoy visitors. Visitors must contact us in advance and state what specifically they find interesting about us & why they would be wanting to visit.
