| We are a 50-year-old consensus-based collective of varying ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations (more than two), genders (more than two), etc. Our focus is on sharing food, cooking, chores, and mutual support for the thirteen member. Some of our time spent together is centered around the nightly dinners, baking for our varied diets, a shared love of bicycles, music, a beautiful garden in our backyard, and activism. We embrace the goal of creating a community based on more then just "tolerance" but one of inclusion, understanding, and support.
Our house is four floors, 13 bedrooms, two permanent guest rooms, fully-stocked kitchen, dining room, pantry, two living rooms, a small library, a meditation/art room, three small porches, a backyard, garden, hot tub, laundry room, six bathrooms (never wait!), guest car parking, voluminous locked bike parking, and DSL.
In the late 1950s / early 1960s a monk from Japan, Shunryu Suzuki, came to San Francisco to teach about the then unheard of religion called "Buddhism." Suzuki went on to establish what is now known as the San Francisco Zen Center and a few of his students banded together to start a dorm, dubbed "East-West House."
After over fifty years, and four locations, East-West House found a permanent home on Baker Street in the late 1980s, and currently is moving towards updating our name in order to better reflect who we are. | Community location is placed at the center of the zip/postal code, city/state, or city/country (not based on street addresses) |
