Jump Off Community Land Trust
Sewanee, Tennessee,
United States
Our purpose is to promote and encourage environmental awareness by maintaining our land for wilderness, educational, and homestead uses; to demonstrate an ecologically sustainable lifestyle that includes affordable housing, energy efficiency, and sustainable agriculture within a cooperative community; and to host seminars, workshops, speakers, and research residencies in natural sciences, arts, spirituality, and related subjects.
We support each other in our livelihoods, spiritual growth, arts and crafts, and other projects. The land is owned in common, but we each have our own house, income, car, tools, etc.
We have 1,100 acres of land, 30 acres cleared, and the balance woodland that has been protected for over 55 years. A resident member may sell, bequeath, or rent their residence subject to approval of the other members. The number of households is limited to 10 and they are situated around the original farm. The residents agreement restricts toxins from being used on the land such as pesticides/herbicides. Most of the 1100 acres are left "forever wild."
