| Founded August 6, 1949, Whitehall Co-op is Texas's oldest housing cooperative. The 13-member household includes a variety of ages and occupations, and everyone contributes equally to monetary costs and household labor. Whitehall is a non-sexist, non-racist, non-competitive living environment. All decisions are made by consensus.
Our goals include obtaining intimate, meaningful tribal/familial bonds, emotional support, and spontaneous and planned creation and play. We are learning proper use of resources, non-competitiveness, and communication skills. We want to be a part of a significant, non-exploitive socioeconomic movement.
The household is vegetarian, though not all members are completely vegetarian. Dinners that include fish or turkey have sometimes been prepared for special occasions with a full consensus agreement by all members. No smoking of any sort is allowed in Whitehall. All members have individual rooms with a shared or semiprivate bathroom. Whitehall was the first Texas recipient of funds from the National Co-op Bank (Washington, DC) in 1979 for use in construction of a professional-grade kitchen, which has been enjoyed by many a great cook over the years. | Contact: 2500 Nueces St Austin, Texas 78705-4522 United States Phone: 512-472-3329, 512-472-7382 Community location is placed at the center of the zip/postal code, city/state, or city/country (not based on street addresses) |
