Tanguy Homesteads
Glen Mills, Pennsylvania,
United States
Tanguy Homesteads began in 1945 when six families bought a 100-acre farm for low-cost housing, cooperatively owned, open to all races and religions. We now have 38 families, varying in race, political perspective, religion, and job skills. Each member family owns a home on 2 acres, plus shares in Tanguy and the community center, ballfield, pond, and woods.
Tanguy is guided by a set of bylaws, but change is a source of constant renewal. Each resident adult is expected to attend our monthly membership meetings and serve on at least one committee, where most work is done. Committees include Activities, Community Building, Land, Pond, Finance, Homestead, New Members, Publications, and Tractor. Members elect new officers and the board of directors each year.
In the monthly meetings we make decisions as a community. No votes are taken ordinarily; decisions are reached through "substantial agreement." Workdays are important in getting many projects completed. Celebrations, holidays, an annual camping trip, ball games, fishing contests, singing, dances, and weekly potlucks all contribute to our community spirit.
We have a monthly assessment ($50), used to maintain road, building, and pond; to pay taxes and insurance; and to support activities. Prospective members are encouraged to attend meetings and community events to learn about Tanguy.
