Sweetwater Community Land Trust
Mansfield, Missouri,
United States
interior road
Nestled in the Missouri Ozarks, we have 480 acres of rural land; 60 acres is farmable, the rest is hilly oak-hickory forest. Our community name derives from our beautiful 50 gallon/minute spring that feeds the headwaters of the Gasconade River.
Land is owned and managed by the trust, which gives 99-year leases for 10-acre home sites. Buildings, tools, vehicles, and businesses are privately owned. Individuals and families manage their own finances. We function as a "neighborhood" where members regulate their level of community involvement. Some members choose to have cooperative housing, gardens, or businesses. Sharing and mutual support are common.
We manage Sweetwater by informal discussion and consensus and by cooperative arrangements among equals. Our focus is land stewardship and environmental quality, as well as optimizing human well-being and relationships. We are nondiscriminatory and open-minded, and we welcome creative individuals.
