| The vision of Kimbercote is to be an inclusive community, chartered as a not-for-profit charity, dedicated to practicing and promoting environmental and social responsibility and stewardship, and engaging in spiritual exploration.
The mission of Kimbercote is to gather people who want to work and learn together, in support of social and environmental goals; to welcome individuals from many cultures, religions, and philosophies who value the nurture of community and work towards its health; to facilitate teamwork towards the realization of our vision; to be receptive to evaluating innovative ideas in line with our vision; and to provide an oasis of inspirational natural beauty in the heart of the Beaver Valley.
We maintain an affordable rural community centre that is used by any group with a social or environmental mandate, including high school and university groups, outdoor appreciation groups, community housing groups, social justice networks, spiritual and/or health retreat groups, disability support groups, and any other organization with a need for retreat or conference space. We also provide relevant social and environmental programming through workshops, hikes, and guided discussions.
Onsite we maintain and showcase our sustainable technologies: solar hot water heater, photovoltaic panels, Waterloo Biofilter, strawbale house, composting toilets, rainwater collection, demonstration garden, and passive solar staff-house. We also have established an organic demonstration garden as a public space, open to individual creativity and collaborative effort by facilitating volunteer participation, holding kitchen and garden workshops, and sharing the abundance of food.
The annual spring and fall Work Weekends attract volunteers who contribute their time and energy to maintaining the Kimbercote facilities, including the buildings, the trails and natural areas, and the demonstration garden. Summerfest is the annual summer get-together event, with activities such as sustainable technology workshops, tours of local Community Supported Agriculture, and presentations by musical or theatrical organizations. The AGM also occurs during this weekend, and in 2009 we will celebrate our 50th anniversary. We also hold an annual musical event known as MusiChaos, with up to 400 people and involving musicians from all across southern Ontario. | Community location is placed at the center of the zip/postal code, city/state, or city/country (not based on street addresses) |
