American Buddhist Shim Gum Do Association
Brighton, Massachusetts,
United States
Shim Gwang Sa (Mind Light Temple) is the main teaching center of the American Buddhist Shim Gum Do Association which teaches the Zen martial art called Shim Gum Do ("Mind Sword Path"). The Founding Master of Shim Gum Do is enlightened Zen Master Chang Sik Kim. Master Kim had his formal Zen training at the Hwa Gye Temple of the Chyoge order of Zen Buddhism in Seoul, Korea, where he entered the temple at the age of thirteen. At the age of twenty-one, Master Kim underwent a one-hundred-day retreat. During this time he discovered Shim Gum Do through his meditation and he attained enlightenment. Shim Gum Do is a Zen practice which brings together the mind and body through dynamic practice of the forms of Shim Gum Do and meditation. Shim Gum Do includes the study of sword and other weapons and also Shin Boep which means "Body Dharma" or "weaponless." The practice of Shim Gum Do emphasizes attaining a clear mind, clear thinking, and clear action. Shim Gum Do is an authentic original art, still taught in its original form. Students have the opportunity to study directly under Shim Gum Do's Founding Master, Great Zen Master Chang Sik Kim. Shim Gwang Sa offers ongoing classes in Shim Gum Do and meditation. Great Zen Master Chang Sik Kim gives regular Dharma Talks. Shim Gwang Sa has a residential program for those who are interested in a more intensive study of Shim Gum Do and traditional Zen practices.
